A minimum of 64 Fatally Wounded in Rio's Largest Security Action on Organized Crime
No less than 64 people were killed in a security raid targeting the organized crime group in the Brazilian city's north zone - the most extensive and fatal action in the Brazilian state's history.
Four law enforcement personnel were included in the fatalities during Operation Containment in the communities of Alemão and Penha, government representatives reported. Over 80 suspects were arrested.
Violent conflicts broke out when about 2,500 security personnel moved in on Tuesday early hours. The criminal organization reacted using shooting, setting fire to barriers and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, authorities stated.
The UN Human Rights Office stated it felt "horrified" by the security action, urging "prompt and effective investigations".
Raid Aftermath
The informal settlements near the city's international airport is regarded as the main base of one of Brazil's most powerful criminal organizations.
Local authorities said a minimum of 50 of the fatalities were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".
Numerous individuals were hurt, including innocent bystanders trapped in shooting.

Locals have compared the elevated neighborhood - inhabited by approximately 300,000 residents - to a "war zone" since the operation began.
